Sagittal synostosis is a condition where sagittal suture of the skull (Growth plate between parietal bones in the midline) fuses early. The sagittal suture usually fuses in adulthood. In Sagittal synostosis, the suture fuses before birth.
This results in a long and narrow head shape, also called as Scaphocephaly.
This is the commonest type of Craniosynostosis all over the world. In India however, the data is lacking. In our practice, we see more Metopic & Unicoronal Synostosis than Sagittal Synostosis.
The main consequences of Unicoronal synostosis are:
Cranial index is the proportion of Bi-parietal diameter (BPD) to the Antero-posterior diameter (APD).
BPD is measured from the widest part of the skull - Side to side.
APD is measured from the longest part of the skull - Front to back
Normal Cranial Index is between 75-85.
Anything below 70 is Scaphocephaly and anything above 90 is Brachycephaly.
Sagittal synostosis requires surgery for complete correction. Our protocol is as follows:
Age below 6 months - Endoscopic strip craniectomy & Orthotic Helmet Therapy
Age above 6 months - Cranial Vault Remodelling
