We advise Helmet therapy for babies with moderate to severe deformational plagiocephaly & deformational brachycephaly. The Helmet Therapy typically lasts 3-4 months and the baby has to wear the helmet for 23 hours in a day for proper results.
After your Craniofacial surgeon advises Helmet Therapy, a thorough assesment is performed by our Orthotists. A cranial scan is done using Smartsoc scanner. The data is sent to our partners Orthomerica (USA), who fabricate the helmets and send it to us. Our American Board certified Orthotists at KARE Orthotics & Prosthetics do the final fitting of the helmet and follow up every 3 weeks to make any adjustments.
Helmet Therapy is a part of the treatment protocol for babies with Single suture Craniosynostosis who present to us before 6 months of age. Surgery (Endoscopic Strip Craniectomy) is followed by helmet Therapy for the next 6-15 months depending on the severity of the deformity and the response to therapy. Typically most babies need 2-3 helmets during the course of their therapy.
Helmet Therapy starts usually 10 days after surgery. After thorough assesment by our Orthotists, a Smartsoc scan is performed. The data is transmitted to our partners Orthomerica (USA), who fabricate the helmets and send it back to us. Our American Board certified Orthotists at KARE Orthotics & Prosthetics do the final fitting of the helmet and follow up every 3 weeks to make any adjustments. 3 monthly check ups are done by the Craniofacial surgeon to monitor the progress of the therapy.
Helmet Therapy prevents skull growth at strategic locations to facilitate the brain to grow in a particular direction to improve a specific deformity in the skull. Example - If there is a flatness in a particular area and prominence in the other area, the Helmet prevents growth in the prominent area which in turn encourages the brain to grow in the flat area and push the skull outwards to improve the flatness. It is passive moulding of the skull.
Our team utilize Helmet therapy for 2 situations:
1. For moderate to severe Positional plagiocephaly & brachycephaly.
2. For correction of Single suture craniosynostosis in babies below 6 months of age - After Endoscopic strip craniectomy surgery.
After a thorough assesment by our certified Orthotists, a Smartsoc scan is performed. The data is recorded in an App in Iphone. This data is then transmitted to our partner ORTHOMERICA (USA), who fabricate the Helmet and send it to us. The Helmet fitting and adjustments are made by our American Board certified Orthotists at KARE Orthotics & Prosthetics. Follow up is required every 3 weeks with the orthotists for regular adjustments to be done to the Helmet. Every 3 months, your Craniofacial surgeon will review Smartsoc scans and the patient to monitor the progress of Helmet Therapy.
Redness, Rashes & Ulcer formation are some of the common side effects. Other unproven side effects are temporary lag in Head circumference and temporary alopecia that can happen. It is extremely important for Certified Orthotist to take care of the Helmet Therapy progress.
