Metopic synostosis

Metopic synostosis is a condition where the metopic suture of the skull (Growth plate on the middle of the forehead) fuses early. The Metopic suture usually fuses between 3months to 9 months of age. In Metopic synostosis, the suture fuses before birth.

This results in a triangular head shape, also called as Trigonocephaly.

Frequently Asked Questions on Metopic synostosis

The main consequences of Metopic synostosis are:

  1. Abnormal head shape - Trigonocephaly - Triangular head shape
  2. Hypotelorism - Closely set eyes
  3. There is a 10% chance that babies with Metopic synostosis can have raised pressure in the brain
  4. Some babies can have speech and learning difficulties or developmental delay. This can range from a mild delay to full blown autism.

In Metopic ridge, there is a prominence in the middle of the forehead over the metopic suture, but the forehead itself is nice and flat. There is no trigonocephaly. Usually this condition improves over a period of time and may not require any treatment.

In Metopic synostosis, the metopic suture ridging is also associated with trigonocephaly. This condition requires treatment.

Metopic synostosis requires surgery for complete correction. Our protocol is as follows:

Age below 6 months - Endoscopic strip craniectomy & Orthotic Helmet Therapy

Age above 6 months - Fronto orbital advancement & remodelling
