Lambdoid synostosis

Lambdoid synostosis is a condition where one of the lambdoid sutures of the skull (Growth plate between occipital and parietal bones) fuses early. The lambdoid sutures usually fuse in adulthood. In Lambdoid synostosis, the suture fuses before birth.

This results in a twisted head shape, also called as Posterior plagiocephaly.

This condition is extremely rare.

Frequently Asked Questions on Lambdoid synostosis

The main consequences of Bicoronal synostosis are:

  1. Abnormal head shape - Posterior plagiocephaly - Twisted head shape - One side of the back of the head is flat and the other side is prominent or bossy
  2. Ridging of lambdoid suture
  3. The ear on the side of the flatness can be pulled backwards towards the flattened area
  4. There is around 10% chance that babies with Lambdoid synostosis can have raised pressure in the brain

Lambdoid synostosis can be confused with Deformational or Positional plagiocephaly.

A simple Skull X-Ray can confirm the diagnosis of Lambdoid synostosis.

Lambdoid synostosis requires surgery for complete correction. Our protocol is as follows:

Age below 6 months - Endoscopic strip craniectomy & Orthotic Helmet Therapy

Age above 6 months - Posterior skull vault remodelling/ Total Cranial Vault Remodelling
